Role Summary:
The Tennis & Wellness Director will provide leadership and oversight for all tennis, racquet sports (including potential pickleball integration), and wellness/fitness-programming operations at TPC Monterey. This role will design, develop and deliver high‐quality member-centric tennis and wellness offerings that match the club’s affluent culture and commitment to holistic member experience. The individual will manage staff, programs, budgets and facilities to drive participation, retention, revenue and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Tennis / Racquet Sports:
- Develop and implement a year-round tennis (and racquet sports) calendar including junior programs, adult leagues, clinics, private/semi-private lessons, team events, tournaments and socials.
- Hire, train, mentor and manage the tennis/racquet staff and coaches, ensuring high standards of instruction, member service and professional development (drawing on best practices from job descriptions for tennis directors).
- Work with membership/integration staff to welcome new members, assess ability levels, place in appropriate programs, and integrate into the club’s racquet culture.
- Manage the tennis facility operations: court scheduling, maintenance coordination, equipment inventory (racquets, balls, shop retail if applicable), and ensure courts meet safety/quality standards.
- Collaborate with marketing/communications to promote tennis programs, events and services to members, prospects and local community.
- Develop and monitor tennis department budget, revenue targets (lessons, clinics, events, retail), and key performance indicators (KPIs) for participation, retention and satisfaction.
Wellness / Fitness:
- Oversee wellness/fitness programs complementary to racquet sports: e.g., fitness assessments, functional training, group classes, wellness/workshops, recovery/rehab coordination, cross‐training programs.
- Develop and integrate wellness initiatives that appeal broadly to membership (including families, tennis players, older adults) aligning with club’s overall wellness and active lifestyle ethos.
- Coordinate with or oversee fitness/wellness staff, coaches, trainers and possibly aquatic/tennis‐fitness interface (given the club amenities).
Member Experience & Culture:
- Serve as an ambassador for the club: fostering relationships with members, being visible on the courts and in wellness areas, modeling the high‐end service culture of TPC Monterey.
- Collaborate with other departments (food & beverage, events, membership, golf, aquatics) to integrate tennis/wellness programming into the wider club calendar (social events, dining, lodging, cross-department member offerings).
- Drive member retention by monitoring member feedback, onboarding/touch-points, and implementing programs to increase engagement and participation.
- Ensure staff deliver outstanding customer service, professional image, communication and responsiveness.
General Leadership & Administration:
- Develop and present annual strategic plan for tennis & wellness, including goals for growth, revenue, retention, staffing, facility enhancements.
- Prepare regular reports for club leadership: metrics, budget variances, program successes, future initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with health & safety standards (on-court, wellness studios, outdoor courts), emergency procedures, staffing certifications (CPR/AED), and club policies.
- Stay up to date with industry trends (tennis/racquet innovations, wellness and fitness trends) and bring forward new ideas/initiatives to keep the club’s offerings fresh and competitive.
- Manage scheduling software, CRM/club-software systems for racquet scheduling, wellness booking, lesson tracking, staff payroll/time, inventory.
Qualifications & Skills:
Education & Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (in sport management, kinesiology, business or related).
- Professional tennis certification (e.g., USPTA, PTR) required or equivalent high-level certification. Suggested by sample tennis director job.
- Certification in fitness/wellness domain (e.g., ACE, NASM, ISSA, or equivalent) preferred.
- CPR/AED certification required.
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a leadership role in a club tennis/racquet sports environment (preferred at private member club).
- At least 3 years’ experience in managing wellness/fitness programming, or closely allied.
- Proven track record driving program growth, revenue generation, member engagement and retention in a high-end club environment.
- Experience with staff hiring, training, supervision, budget management, facility operations.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills with polished service mindset.
- Strategic thinker with business acumen: ability to interpret data, set goals, manage budgets, analyze KPI’s and drive outcome.
- Excellent program development skills: ability to design innovative tennis & wellness offerings that engage members across ages, levels, backgrounds.
- Strong organizational skills and comfort overseeing multiple programs/staff/facilities concurrently.
- Tech-savvy: proficiency with club management software, scheduling systems, Excel/Word, CRM tools. Sample from tennis professional role emphasises computer record‐keeping.
- Adaptability: comfortable working evenings, weekends and outdoor conditions (tennis courts). Example roles require flexible schedule.
- Customer service focus: ability to build member relationships, mentor staff to deliver consistent and excellent experiences.
- Knowledge or interest in wellness trends, fitness growth areas, and how to integrate racquet sports and wellness offerings.
Working Conditions:
- High-end private club environment serving affluent, family-oriented membership on the Monterey Peninsula.
- Mix of indoor/outdoor (tennis courts, wellness studios, outdoor benches/courts) settings. Some exposure to outdoor weather conditions (sun, heat) especially on tennis courts.
- Must be available for early mornings, evenings and weekends to support clinics, leagues, tournaments and wellness classes/socials.
- Membership expectations around professionalism, appearance, service and positive culture alignment with TPC Monterey’s standards.
Performance Metrics / Success Indicators:
- Growth in tennis participation: number of lessons, clinics, leagues, tournaments.
- Growth in wellness program participation and integration with racquet/club offerings.
- Member retention rates in tennis and wellness departments.
- Achievement of budgeted lesson revenue, program revenue, retail (if applicable) margins.
- Staff performance, satisfaction and retention within tennis & wellness.
- Member satisfaction ratings (feedback, surveys) specific to tennis & wellness.
- Innovation: introduction of new programs, racquet sports/wellness synergy, tournaments/events that enhance club value.
- Effective collaboration with other departments (membership, events, F&B, lodging) to elevate the overall club experience.
